Why do we need ISO 45001:2018 certification? What are the benefits of ISO 45001:2018 certification?

ISO 45001 certification is applicable to all organizations, regardless of scale, industry or nature of business.

Workplace health and safety is the number one concern for most businesses, yet deaths and injuries do occur. ISO 45001 sets a minimum standard of practice to protect employees around the world.

Occupational health and safety management system – Required with instructions for use, is the world’s first International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S). It provides a framework for increasing safety, reducing workplace risks, and promoting health and well-being in the workplace, enabling an organization to proactively improve its OH&S performance.

Who/what organization is ISO 45001 certification for?

ISO 45001 certification is applicable to all organizations, regardless of scale, industry or nature of business. It is designed to be integrated into the organization’s existing management processes and follows the same high-level structure as other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System).

What are the benefits for an ISO 45001 certified business?

ISO 45001 enables organizations to adopt an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. This will help them manage OH&S risks and improve OH&S performance by developing and implementing effective policies and objectives.

Key benefits from using standards include:

Reduce incidents in the workplace

Reduce absenteeism and staff turnover, leading to increased productivity

Reduce insurance premium

Create a health and safety culture whereby employees are encouraged to take an active role in their own occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system

Leadership commitment is reinforced to proactively improve the performance of the occupational health and safety management system (OH&S).

Able to meet legal and regulatory requirements

Improve the reputation

Improve employee morale

How is it different from other OH&S standards?

ISO 45001 was developed with consideration of other relevant standards, such as OHSAS 18001, Occupational health and safety management, ILO-OSH 2001 guidelines of the International Labor Organization and various national standards, while being consistent with ILO international labor conventions and standards.

Developed under the ISO system, with input from experts from more than 70 countries, it provides an international framework that takes into account the interaction between an organization and its business environment. ISO 45001 takes a risk-based approach to ensure that it is effective and is continuously improved to meet the organization’s ever-changing context.

Is it possible to integrate ISO 45001 into an existing management system?

ISO 45001 shares a high-level structure (HLS), core text, and identical terms and definitions with other recently revised ISO management system standards such as ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 This framework is designed to facilitate the integration of new management topics into the organization’s established management system. In addition, ISO 45001 is designed to follow ISO 14001 fairly closely, as many organizations internally combine OH&S and environmental management functions. This will simplify the integration of ISO 45001, especially for those already familiar with ISO 14001.

What about ISO 45001:2018 certification?

ISO 45001 certification is not a requirement of the standard but can be a useful tool to demonstrate that you meet its criteria. If you are already certified to OHSAS 18001 and although this is a very different standard, you will already have some of the tools and systems needed to implement ISO 45001.

How do I get started with ISO 45001:2018 certification?

If you are considering implementing ISO 45001, here are a few ways to get started:

  1. Perform an analysis of your organization’s context in relation to occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system (such as stakeholders) as well as internal and external factors that may affect your business.
