Natural gas is made up of plankton carcasses that accumulate on the ocean floor and are compressed under layers of sediment. Over millions of years, pressure and heat convert these organics into natural gas. Natural gas with the main composition of methane CH4 (85%) is commonly found in oil fields in the Earth’s crust, exploited and refined into fuel that provides about 25% of the world's energy supply.
